I have watched only the  100 episodes, here are the reasons which kept me coming back

He was a guy. I love how the writers created the confusion. They might be trying to imply  that some things matter more than gender-- they are the identity, its the purity at heart, the dreams, the passion to help. 

They portrait that belongingness is something even the cruellest of humans want :)
